This folkloric fine art print, the last in a series of three, captures the story of Odin’s sacrifice for the knowledge of the runes and runic magic (galdr), told within the Havamal, and reshapes it through the lens of tarot and queer archaeology.
Traditionally, the 9 of Pentacles represents success, independence, confidence, freedom, security, and stability. This card tells you that you have gained maturity and wisdom through perseverance.
The Odin of Lejre, an archaeological artifact featured prominently in this collage print, adds a new layer of meaning. It speaks to what goes unsaid about Odin’s achievement in the Havamal: that his sacrifice for the runes utilized the skill of women—Freyja, the mother of seidr, and the Norns, keepers of fate. To know the runes, Odin had to perform magical sacrifice—seidr-craft—something deemed ergi (queer) for men to practice. In this retelling of Odin’s quest for wisdom, it is his embrace of queerness which grants him success on that journey.
